Jurisdiction overview

Following separate liberations from British rule in the early 1960’s, the states of Tanganyika and Zanzibar united to form Tanzania in 1964. The country is a member state of the Commonwealth of Nations, and alongside Swahili, English is an official language. As with several other ex-colonial states, the Tanzanian legal framework is based on the English common law system.

The Tangayika Law Society is a member of the East Africa Law Society. The nations are considering the adoption of a common legal system in the near future, as well as a shared currency.
