Welcome to the IFLR1000’s 2015 guide to Energy and infrastructure

Over the course of the last six months our team of financial law journalists in London, Hong Kong and New York have conducted interviews with lawyers, industry figures and inhouse counsel active in the relevant sectors to source their opinions not only on law firm performance but also the state of the industry in their respective countries and regions and what they see as the main talking points, challenges and areas of activity.

Scope

The 2015 survey is our third edition of our research into the Energy and infrastructure markets and we have made a conscious decision this year to focus on the merits of sector specific legal advice. What this means is that our law firm ranking tables are divided by industry sector rather than practice area.

Sectors covered by the research include:

• Energy (renewable and traditional energy, generation and distribution)
• Mining
• Oil and gas
• Social infrastructure (hospitals, schools, public buildings and developments)
• Transport (road, rail, sea and air ports)
• Telecommunications networks
• Utilities (sewage, waste and water)

Within these sectors we have analysed law firm performance across a range of skill sets including:

• Contracts
• Disputes
• EPC
• PPP/PFI
• Project development
• Project finance
• Public procurement
• Regulatory

Survey statistics

The 2015 survey is the most in depth research the IFLR1000 has ever undertaken into the energy and infrastructure markets. The survey statistics are below:

• 110 jurisdictions covered
• 6000 industry figures contacted as part of the Client Feedback Survey
• 750 law firms participated in the research
• 1455 individual lawyers recommended

Methodology

Our law firm rankings are based on three key criteria:

1 Transactional evidence

We ask all firms to provide transactional highlights from their last 12 months of work.

We also analyse statistical evidence of transaction values and volumes provided by market survey title Dealogic.

2 Client feedback

We speak to a wide range of corporate and in-house contacts as part of our Client Feedback Survey to get their opinions on the firms and lawyers they use.

We ask for feedback on the following attributes:

• Technical ability
• Accessibility and communication
• Depth of team
• Value for money
• Client/lawyer relationship
• International network

3 Peer feedback

We conduct an online ranking feedback survey of law firm partners to get their thoughts and feedback on our current law firm rankings and leading lawyers. We also conduct phone and face-to-face interviews with leading practitioners.

Client Feedback Survey

As part of our research we also asked industry figures to answer a few short questions about their experience in these key sectors in the past year. The results are below:

Are you intending to review your external legal counsel over the next 12 months?

How do you anticipate that your spend on legal services will change over the next 12 months?

What do you consider to be the biggest challenge facing energy and infrastructure projects in your jurisdiction?
