JLA Advogados is a Mozambican law firm which is in a partnership with Portuguese law firm Abreu Advogados. JLA is led by managing partner Zara Jamal and is based in Maputo. Abreu Advogados is an international law firm from Portugal with a focus on business law. The firm has a focus on financial and corporate work but is also very active in project development. 

 

Highlights  

JLA Advogados is assisting the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) in a USD 150 million financing, for one of the largest open pit graphite mining projects in Mozambique. The team is acting as local counsel and led by partner Zara Jamal, who is assisted by Ana Sofia Batista, Mafalda Teixeira de Abreu, and Isabel Pinheiro Torres. The advice is currently ongoing.  

The firm is also advising Portucel Mozambique (incorporated by the Navigator Company) in an integrated forestry project to produce wood for paper pulp and energy in Mozambique. The team, led by Zara Jamal and Miguel Teixeira de Abreu, is acting as local counsel and assisting in the client in all matters necessary to ensure the implementation of the project. The project is currently ongoing.
