Australian mid-market firms Thomsons Lawyers and Herbert Geer are set to merge to form Thomson Geer from March 14 2014. The combination will form the seventh largest independent firm in the country with 81 partners and over 230 lawyers.

Adrian Tembel from Thomson Lawyers will become the new entity’s chief executive partner. John Cain, managing partner of Herbert Geer, said: "The critical thing to building successful firms with mergers is aligning the culture, and that requires a lot of work and a lot of assessment but if you get it right the rewards are significant."

The combined firm will be strongest in M&A, real estate, intellectual property, banking and finance and insurance. The merger will also increase the firm’s strength in health, gaming, telecommunications and wealth management.
