In an unprecedented development, a Colombian law firm and a Chilean law firm will merge to create a major regional firm. Prietocarrizosa and Philippi, in association with Iberian law firm Uría Menéndez, will commence operations on January 1, 2015, as Philippi Prietocarrizosa & Uría. The merged entity’s resources will include nearly 400 lawyers and ancillary staff, including six partners, and will have offices in Bogota and Barranquilla, Colombia, and Santiago, Chile.
Juan Francisco Gutiérrez, Philippi’s chairman, described the coming combination as the result of the development, consolidation, and innovation within his firm.
“For a long time we had identified the need to join the growing internationalization process that Chilean companies are experiencing, particularly in the Pacific Alliance region,” he said. “We are fortunate to join forces with two law firms with which we have a longstanding relationship in addition to sharing professional ethics and values. This has paved the way to pioneer this approach and most importantly, to address our clients’ needs.”
The merger purports to be in response to the growing demand for new services necessitated by increasing interaction among the different countries in the Pacific Alliance, and the rising interest of European, Asian, and North American companies in Latin America.
