Holland & Knight’s Mexico City office snagged a team of five lawyers, bringing the number of lawyers in the office to 25. The team includes partners Luis Rubio Barnetche and Octavio Lecona Morales and senior counsel Selene Espinosa, Blanca Luévano García and Jaime Rodriguez.
“We just saw a wonderful opportunity,” Rubio Barnetche said. “Holland & Knight is growing in Mexico, it has a great reputation in Mexico and it seemed like a great fit for our team.”
The lawyers all join the firm from Jones Day. With the exception of Rodriguez, the team all originally joined Jones Day from Greenberg Traurig in June 2015. (Rodriguez worked at Ogletree Deakins prior to joining Jones Day in August 2015.)
Rubio Barnetche will act as executive partner of Holland & Knight's Mexico City office. He works on M&A as well as on contracts and trade proceedings, and he was part of the team that negotiated NAFTA.
Lecona Morales, Espinosa and Luévano Garcia are all M&A lawyers. In addition to M&A, Lecona Morales focuses on telecommunications and technology matters, Espinosa works on project finance, and Luévano Garcia works on telecoms and antitrust matters. Rodriguez focuses his practice on labor, employment and benefits.
In an interview with IFLR1000, Rubio discussed his thoughts on the market in the upcoming year. “This year is going to be challenging for firms,” he said. “On one side, we have general elections in July so for the first part of the year everyone’s attention will be focused on the elections. We’re also in the middle of renegotiating NAFTA, and the future of NAFTA is uncertain. I would expect more movement towards the end of the year.”
