  • Idemitsu Kosan has acquired 33.3% of Showa Shell Sekiyu for $6.523 billion from Royal Dutch Shell.
  • The deal is part of what was a wider plan for the two companies to merge, though this was later blocked by the founding family of Idemitsu.
  • The two companies are oil distributors. Idemitsu has refineries in Hokkaido, Chiba and Aichi. Showa Shell has refineries in Chiba, Kanagawa, Mie and Yamaguchi.
