Overview:

  • The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has negotiated a £1.4 billion contract for HMS Agamemnon, a new Astute class attack submarine.
  • The new vessel is the sixth of a new seven strong fleet being developed by BAE Systems in Barrow-in-Furness.
  • The submarine is 300ft long and weighs in at 7,400-tonne.
  • Construction of the submarine is already underway but the new contract changes the terms and sets new targets.
  • BAE employs around 8,400 people in its submarines group.
