Overview:
- The new Hanthawaddy airport will be located on 9,600 acres about 48 miles outside the commercial centre and former capital of Yangon.
- The construction began in March 1994, yet the project was put on halt completely in October 2013.
- The negotiation for the building contract of this airport was originally granted to a consortium led by South Korea’s Incheon Airport, but it never materialised and therefore contributed to the push back of the construction.
- The new airport will increase capacity from the previous 2.7 million passengers per year to 3.5 million by 2015 and 6 million by 2019.
- Japan's JGC Corporation, Singapore's Changi Airport International and Yongnam Holdings are part of HIA (Myanmar), the company that is involved in developing the Hanthawaddy Airport.
