Lupiya is Head of Banking and M&A for Corpus and primarily acts for international clients on their transactions in Zambia, including international development banks seeking to invest in Zambia’s growing the private sector, as well as international commercial banks. Lupiya helps his clients understand and successfully overcome local law challenges and risks related to financing and leasing of assets across the region.
Lupiya has over 12 years’ experience with his principal areas of expertise being; syndicated bank lending (including acquisition finance, trade and export finance), restructuring and rescheduling of various kinds of financings as well as structured finance. He has particularly been influential on matters relating to sovereign debt and guarantees.
Lupiya has also been instrumental in advising high profile matters such as being advisor to a consortium of lenders comprising among others, Nederlandse Financierings-Maatschappij Voor Ontwikkelingslanden N.V., Societe de Promotion et Participation pour la Cooperation Economique, the African Development Bank, Development Bank of Southern Africa and Proparco in relation to the USD 142 million project financing of the 120 MW Build Own Operate and Transfer (BOOT) Itezhi-Thezi Power and Transmission Line in Zambia.
He has also been advisor to The African Development Bank (AfDB), a multilateral development finance institution headquartered in Abidjan Ivory Coast, on the provision of USD 25 million and ZMW 248,535,000 (USD 26,947.4394) lines of credit to the Development Bank of Zambia (DBZ).
Others matters include Lupiya being advisor to a syndicate of lenders on the USD 449,090,629.71 financing to the Government of the Republic of Zambia for the construction of a water harvesting and supply system in Kafulafuta District of the Republic of Zambia as well as advisor to Standard Chartered Bank on a USD 1 billion facility to First Quantum’s Kansanshi Mines Plc in the North -Western Province of Zambia.
Lupiya, a Chambers and IFLR1000-ranked attorney, holds an LLM in Commercial Law from the University of Cambridge and an LLB from the University of Zambia.
He is an Advocate of the Superior Courts of Zambia, a member of the Law Association of Zambia and Law Society of England and Wales. Lupiya is also admitted as a solicitor of England and Wales.
