We operate panels in many practice areas and in many countries. We don't always have a practice area specialist who knows firms in the country, so that is where guides like this come in handy.
The IFLR1000 is a useful cross reference to refer to ... to make sure a personal referral aligns with some objective rankings from a survey. I would refer to it in my main area, M&A, when looking for a counsel in a country we are new to.
The country-by-country tiered rankings by practice area are a good approach, to get a rough feel if a firm is viewed as active in a practice area.

We refer to the IFLR1000 because of the breadth of jurisdictions it covers, the succinct clear layout and leading lawyer recommendations.
We use the guide in particular where we are taking security in unknown or little-known jurisdictions.

There are mixed fortunes for the different departments at Krogerus. While the banking and finance team has impressed clients in other areas it has struggled. Partner losses this year do not impact too much on its standing in the market, though the impression of it as a firm on the grow has certainly been dented. Key hires in the coming years may be necessary if it is to maintain its current position in those other areas.
"Krogerus is large in its number of lawyers as it has regional offices all over Finland and acts for some domestic Finnish lenders but it is not retained for demanding projects by non-Finnish clients other than maybe when the top firms are conflicted," says one peer. This 'good but limited' message is echoed by clients who see it as a "reliable office" for the more straightforward deals. "I have been very happy with their work," says one banking in-house counsel. "We mostly use Krogerus for smaller cases, not the largest ones and they are very good at that. They have very good forms and facility agreements where you don't need all the extra paperwork."
The banking and finance team moves into tier 2 this year, thanks largely to impressive client feedback. Practice head Päivi Toivari draws a lot of praise and is described by one international partner as "diligent, hard-working and knowledgeable". A banking in-house counsel says: "[She is] very good a pointing out the main issue, the real concerns, and then getting the process going forward smoothly. She's a very good negotiator and knows which points are important and which we can skip or not take so seriously."
The loss of leading lawyer Kati Mattila, who joined Kone as an in-house counsel in August 2012, is a blow to the capital markets team but it retains its tier 3 ranking this year with some impressive deals including advising Pohjola Bank, as arranger and dealer, and dealers Danske Bank, Nordea Bank Finland, Svenska Handelsbanken and Swedbank in SATO Corporation's €500 million secured note issuance programme. One banking client notes the "international scope for capital markets transactions is a bit limited" but this view contrasts with that of another banking client who says the firm has "an international network that enables them to deal in all sorts of domestic and international matters". Partner Mårten Knuts comes in for particular praise with clients noting he has "excellent communication skills", "a unique combination of expertise, innovation and business knowledge" and that he "always keeps his clients' interests on his mind".
Senior associate Tom Fagernäs's work in the mergers and acquisitions field caught the attention of one client who says he "listens well to the customer's needs and wants, replies always quickly and communicates well". Similarly, senior associate Ilkka Liljeroos impressed another client who described him as "accurate, correct and sharp". They say: "I have nothing negative to say about the work of Iklka and Krogerus. Without their help we would not have been able to do the work we did." The emergence of this kind of young talent will be important if the firm is to retain its ranking with the loss of the knowledge and experience of Mattila and also partner Priha Pohjanpalo, who left to join Metso in September 2012, from this team. The addition of experienced lawyer Hanne Keidasto in August 2012 will help.
