Baker & McKenzie has hired one of Spain's (and Europe's) most senior arbitration and litigation lawyers: José María Alonso Puig. He will formally join the firm's dispute resolution practice as a partner in Madrid in March.

Alonso was managing partner at Garrigues for nine years, from 2000-09, stepping down after three consecutive elections to the position to become the firm's head of arbitration. His practice focuses on contractual and corporate disputes, insurance litigation and insolvencies, with a specialisation in sports law.

Alonso has a worldwide reputation and he has acted in over 2,000 cases before Spanish courts involving domestic and international matters and before courts throughout Europe as well as in Morocco, Israel and Australia. As an arbitrator he has handled over 100 cases.

In late 2011 the Spanish independent also lost project finance head José Guardo to Clifford Chance (5 Sept 2011).
