Penkov Markov & Partners has consolidated its position in the second tier. As one of the early firms established at the start of the democratic and economic reforms, Penkov Markov & Partners has an integrated practice. "Penkov is well established, very capable and have good standing," says one client, with another describing the experience as "extremely positive".
Ivan Markov is highlighted as a stand out practitioner: "If I have major issues and want quality advice, I go to him," says one client, while another adds: "Our general experience, excellent. Mr Markov's professional, experienced, common sense and realistic approach stood out."
Last year the firm advised Solar Projects with respect to two photovoltaic (solar) projects valued at €70 million. Its corporate advice ranged from obtaining all the necessary state permissions and licenses to the final preparation of SPA with Toshiba. Additionally the firm acted as legal counsel to SACE / Credit Suisse in connection to the €15 million security of loan agreements obligations with regard to five residential real estate units located in Sofia. Furthermore, the firm is advising Kardan/Tahal Group Assets on the Bulgarian law aspects of the €6 million financing to its Bulgarian subsidiary (active in vegetable and fruit processing). Another highlight saw the firm advising a large financial group in the acquisition of a small Bulgarian bank.
Some clients made mention of the firms high fees, however this was somewhat justified by the quality of work received: "They're one of the expensive legal firms around, but they have a good name. It's sophisticated," says one client, reiterating: "The service is at an extremely high level but they're very expensive, but I'm satisfied."
