Established in 1993, one year after Kazakhstan's declaration of independence, Aequitas has been a feature of the country's legal landscape for quite some time. Over the years, the local law firm has been able to attract some high profile clientele such as the World Bank, European Bank of Reconstruction & Development (EBRD), JPMorgan, Merrill Lynch, Credit Suisse and ExxonMobil. Moreover, as local counsel, the firm has been a favorite for international firms that lack a direct presence in the country and it has developed professional ties with, to name a few, Norton Rose, Linklaters, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Allen & Overy.
Nevertheless, market commentators suggest that the firm operates in a
different sphere. "Aequitas, frankly speaking, are local. We haven't
come across them this year. We respect them but don't come across them
in [the] financial sector...they give good advice," says one partner. "I
don't see Aequitas at all," says another partner, adding: "Some say
they're good...[its] people are nice and smart."
