Hughes & Hughes is a mid-sized firm with a strong M&A practice, according to market feedback. "They are solid, with important clients," says one peer. Marcela Hughes won praise from competitors. "Marcela Hughes is certainly the main figure and we see her on all sorts of transactions," says one.
In January, the firm advised BBVA on its purchase of the Uruguayan operations of Credit Agricole. BBVA Uruguay is now the country's third-largest banking institution, after purchasing Credit Uruguay Banco, consumer credit company Emprendimientos de Valor, and insurance broker Credit Agricole Distribuidora de Seguros. It enjoys a 12% market share.
Early in 2011, the firm started work for Pöyry Energy in all negotiations and contractual work regarding the Montes del Plata pulp mill project. The firm is still advising Pöyry.
