Angara Abello Concepcion Regala & Cruz continues to dominate the market in restructuring and insolvency. Peers praise the firm for its depth of practice, as it has one of the largest teams of lawyers in the country. Its strength in litigation is especially highly regarded, with a competitor noting that "the firm is well known for its litigation capability".
The return of senior partner Francis Lim in July 2010 continues to be touted by the market as a shot in the arm for the firm's financial and corporate practice. A continuing notable matter for the firm is its role advising Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation and GP Holdings in Sun Life Financial's acquisition of a 49% ownership interest from GP Holdings in Grepalife Financial.
The restructuring and insolvency team, led by Gilbert Gallos, continues its work on the rehabilitation of Bayan Telecommunications, which has been in progress since 2001, representing Export Development Canada and Goldman Sachs. This is the first case where the Supreme Court will directly address the issue of the treatment of secured against unsecured creditors during rehabilitation. The total value involved in this case has been reported at $611 million.
