We refer to the IFLR1000 because of the breadth of jurisdictions it covers, the succinct clear layout and leading lawyer recommendations.
We use the guide in particular where we are taking security in unknown or little-known jurisdictions.

We operate panels in many practice areas and in many countries. We don't always have a practice area specialist who knows firms in the country, so that is where guides like this come in handy.
The IFLR1000 is a useful cross reference to refer to ... to make sure a personal referral aligns with some objective rankings from a survey. I would refer to it in my main area, M&A, when looking for a counsel in a country we are new to.
The country-by-country tiered rankings by practice area are a good approach, to get a rough feel if a firm is viewed as active in a practice area.

Al Sarraf & Al Ruwayeh & Partners
Without question Kuwait’s leading firm, Al Sarraf & Al Ruwayeh & Partners (ASAR – Al Ruwayeh & Partners) has more breadth, quality, capacity and experience than any of its rivals. “The best firm in Kuwait,” says one client. And a peer observes: “They have a very strong team with Sam Habbas and Rob Little – very experienced guys who understand the market.” Another client adds: “Unlike some of the other firms here, especially newly arrived foreign firms, the firm gets on with the job and does not waste time grandstanding or trying to impress the other lawyer’s clients.” Clients also appreciate that ASAR’s lawyers are well versed in both international and local law.
Key partners at the firm include the aforementioned Little and Habbas, who clients describes as a "first-class practitioner and business advisor", and Hossam Abdullah.
One of Little and Abdullah's highest profile recent deals is their representation of Global Investment House, one of Kuwait's largest investment houses, on its $1.7 billion debt restructuring.
The two lawyers are also collaborating to advise the National Industries Group on a $521 million syndicated murabaha (deferred sale) financing facility.
