Majmudar & Co enters the banking rankings this year on the back of outstanding client feedback and peer support. Led by the "youthful but experienced" managing partner Akil Hirani, the firm continues to expand its presence beyond its Mumbai base. A client recommends the firm for its strength in depth: "[They have] good younger partners that come in and the bench is pretty good. The associates are well-trained. It's surprising. You often hear in the market that partners are great, but worker bees that come behind them aren't very good. [Akil Hirani] focuses on getting associates' hands dirty early so they have practical experience."
The firm represents clients in cross-border deals, with one standout being the representation of Axis Bank in its financing of the Essar group's Cyprus entity. Valued at $150 million and closed in August 2010, this Hirani-led transaction was completed during a patchy period for structured deals. A client singles out Hirani for praise: "He understands US and EU clients. Akil practiced in both England and US and is barred in both places. He does a lot of work with international clients. The clients like the tenor and quality of the advice given."

Majmudar & Co retains its rankings this year, with the addition of partner Rukshad Davar from Bharucha & Partners in 2011 a sign of its ambition to continue growing its corporate practice. Clients recommend the firm, with one offering: "I would rate them very high. I've worked with other companies and [the firm] really deserves its own class."
A notable transaction for the firm was its advising of Reliance Venture Asset Management for its investment in AllGreen Energy Indi. Valued at $12 million, this transaction was a substantial investment in the country's renewable energy sector. Partner Raja Sujith was the lead on this deal. A client recommends Sujith: "He's very knowledgeable, especially knowledge as it pertains to international law and labour laws and particularly in the software and IT field. He's excellent. I would recommend him."
