A testament to the strength and continuity of Lara López Matamoros Rodríguez & Tinoco is that two of the partners who founded the firm in 1966 still practice there, Franklin Matamoros Calderón and Arnoldo López Echandi. Historically, the firm's focus has been domestic banking, primarily closing credit transactions for banks and advising them on regulatory issues with supervisors. More recently Lara López reports an uptick in estate planning.
A client of 20 years says, "I strongly believe they are the best law firm in my country." She gives the firm high marks for its "good worldwide network," and singles out Franklin Matamoros in particular as, "an excellent lawyer".
In a deal that closed in December 2010, Lara Lopez advised a major Latin American warehousing business, on the restructuring of its $65 million bank debt, a result of the 2008 financial crisis.
And in a deal involving two of Costa Rica's big pensions funds last year, attorneys Roberto León and Ricardo Hernández advised HSBC- and Scotia Bank-owned IBP Operadora de Pensiones Complementairs on its merger with the state-owned Operadora de Planes de Pensiones Complementarias del Banco Popular y de Desarrollo Comunal.
