Abrahams Davidson & Co consolidates a place in the top tier this year. On the back of outstanding praise from both peers and clients, the firm has been particularly highly regarded for its Islamic banking practice. A client says: "We frequently go to [the firm]. I found them to be very professional and understanding of Islamic transactions. They understood what they were doing very well and it helps when you have someone who understands particular areas of your business."
In a fine example of a collaborative effort between a foreign investment entity and the government of Brunei, a notable transaction for the firm was its representation of SBI Holdings of Japan and Ministry of Finance of Brunei in the setting up of the first Islamic compliant private equity fund. This matter was led by Bernard Tan and was completed in August 2010.
A peer in the market notes that the firm has "quite some volume of banking work". "[It is] very well-known and respected; one of the leading firms in Brunei. The firm possesses a good reputation as a leading banking law firm and we have a very good knowledge of their work ethic," says a client
The firm exhibits a fine range of services with some notable examples of work including: advising a well-known original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in the weapons and arms industry with regards to sale of weapons and arms to Brunei Darussalam and through an intermediary; advising on a multi-million dollar Islamic financing for a commercial and hotel project for Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD); and advising on legal and regulatory compliance for various international banks and international law firms on the sale of structured financial instruments to the government of Brunei and related public entities.
To bolster an already reputable banking practice, the firm welcomed the arrival of Nor Suhaila Abdul Latif from Malaysian law firm Skrine in October 2010. This addition brings particular experience in Islamic banking, but has equal exposure in both banking and general corporate/commercial areas of practice.
