Conyers boasts a strong client base and works primarily with legal teams and their clients in leading US and London law firms, drawing on expertise from its global network.
Over the past year, the firm has established practice groups for hedge funds, joint ventures, finance, corporate, private equity and regulatory. The regulatory group was established in response to the Securities and Investment Business Act (SIBA) and is headed by Anton Goldstein, who in 2010 advised nine of the world's 20 largest banking institutions on SIBA-related issues.
While some in the market seeing the firm as a one-man show, with one partner suggesting that Conyers is "very much perceived to be (leading partner) Robert Briant", the firm maintains its top-ranking position. Another peer points out that the firm "delivers high quality work".
Tragically, partner Guy Eldridge died in a boating accident in March 2010.
Conyers reports a significant increase in BVI aircraft finance work over the past year. Briant and associate Audrey Robertson advised Bank of America on the lease financing of a Dessault Falcon 2000LX for $15 million in a deal that closed in February 2011, and on the acquisition financing of a Dassault Aviation Model Falcon 900 EX in November 2010 for $144 million.
Other highlights include advising Ratel Gold, a Toronto Stock Exchange-listed company, in January 2011 on BVI and Cayman law relating to 32.8 million subscription receipts with gross proceeds of C$40 million ($42.3 million).
