Simont Braun's practice is led by Vanessa Marquette. Highlight transactions saw the firm advising Aedifica on a €67.5 million public rights issue listed on the Brussels Euronext. The advice was led by Sandrine Hirsch.

In another deal, Marquette advised Communauté Francaise de Belgique on a €4 billion EMTN programme with arrangers Deutsche Bank and Dexia.

Simont Braun is known for having a solid position in the French speaking market and it has of late been building a market share on the Flemish side.

Vanessa Marquette leads the finance team and recently advised Europa Capital, a European real estate fund manager, on a loan agreement with BNP Paribas Fortis to finance the acquisition of a plot of prime real estate in central Brussels.

One of the firm's regular clients is Société Générale and its subsidiary SG Private Banking. The France based bank instructed the team on various transactions throughout the past 12 months for matters such as credit agreements and banking regulatory matters related to the EU Payment Service Directive.

Another notable banking deal saw the firm advise SFINC Group (part of AXA Private Equity) in negotiations with a syndicate of banks including ING, KBC and Fortis, for financing of an acquisition of Jadico Holding (a Dutch group of food industry companies).

Simont Braun joins the rankings for the first time after solid feedback from the market. The firm "has some very knowledgeable M&A people and some good clients like AB Invest," says one peer. The firm is best known for handling 'French' deals, although it has been working to increase its share in the Flemish market.

Sandrine Hirsch comes in for praise as a result of her advice on the sale of Zurich a few years ago: "High quality, very academic and practical," says a peer.

In 2010, the firm advised Aedifica on corporate matters and a series of acquisitions to help it develop its nursing homes portfolio and assisted Systemat in a €10 million management buyout. Another deal saw the firm act for Europa Capital real estate management fund on the purchase of a plot of land in Brussels and AXA PE in the private auction of Desotec.
