Alrud is a highly notable name among the local firms in Russia, and has handled a lot of restructuring work over the past couple of years.
The team has much work still under confidentiality but a good deal that shows the level of the firm came with partner and department head Alexander Zharskiy advising OTP Bank Nyrt (Hungary) on a number of facilities that required restructuring. All in all the deals came to a cumulative value of $150 million and closed out in September 2010.

Alrud is one of the preeminent Russian firms, viewed as one of select few domestic outfits that can be mentioned in the same breath as international firms. "Alrud did some solid deals," states one partner.
This is not a unanimous opinion though, as some peers do feel that international clients require international firms, as one says: "I would never recommend a Russian firm to an international client. Simple as that."
The firm does however have an international capability, best demonstrated on a good deal it completed this year. This was advising, in cooperation with Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, Skype, as it acquired Qik, a California-based mobile video software company that maintains an office in Moscow. The deal spanned a number of jurisdictions and completed fully in January 2011.
In addition to this, the firm joined up with a number of international firms, including Slaughter and May, to put together a joint venture aimed at investing in the tourism industry in Russia.

Alrud has been very active in this type of work over the past few years, making the most of its intimate local knowledge and contacts to garner a lot of mid-market work. This continued into 2010-11, with a number of mandates pushed its way.
On one, partner Alexander Zharskiy advised OJSC Pharmacy as it looked to avoid an occurrence of defaults brought on by related defaults of companies within its group. The default was successfully avoided with a restructuring of debt and equity facilities worth $110 million, with the finalising of the deal still being worked on.
Alrud's team is also currently representing a confidential eastern European bank with regard to the bankruptcy procedure of INCOM Auto, a mandate worth around $10 million that is still in the process of being completed.
