Although competitors comment that Boekel de Nerée is not very visible in the capital markets, client are keen on the firm in a local counsel role on international capital markets deals, debt and capital markets. It also has a strong practice advising underwriters.
"Obviously strong competencies in all sorts of areas, do a good job of staffing properly and from a service and performance perspective all good and the people we deal with are strong players," says a client. The service perspective is key and the firm recently opened an office in London which will up its profile for international transactions. Senior partner Ferdinand Mason and associate Casper Haket are both highly recommended.
In addition the firm has made some moves to boost its presence and in October and December 2010 recruited partners Arjen Mulderije and Cars-Jan van Gool from local competitors. Ferdinand Mason is the firm's key lawyer and he led on all its biggest mandates.
Among the big deals, Mason, supported by Joel Erwteman, was engaged by Weil Gotshal & Manges to act as local counsel on Photon Energy's potential IPO on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. The pair also won a mandate from Computershare, the global securities manager, on the listing of LyondellBasell on the New York Stock Exchange. Mason, Erwteman and Hans Sachse were engaged by US firm Latham & Watkins to advise on the local aspects of Siemens Enterprise Communications' €200 million bond issue.

Hans Sachse heads up the banking team along with Jan Broekhuizen, who leads on a good number of the firm's standout deal.
The firm also got its fair share of referral work, acting alongside Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker to advise Capita Asset Services on the €1.2 billion restructuring of mortgage loans leased to the Karstadt department store (now in administration) and Calfee, Halter & Griswold for Invacare Group's $400 million revolving credit facility.
As lead counsel, Thiele advised the firm's regular client Eurohypo in March 2011 on its €176 million participation in a JP Morgan arranged loan and Deutsche Pfandbriefbank on a €135 million refinancing of the Hanzevast Capital Group, closed in September 2010. Possibly the biggest deal for the firm, saw Thiele act for Rabo/Bouwfonds European Real Estate Parking Fund on a variety of financings, some arranged by WestImmo, totalling €770 million. The deal was on-going in mid-2011.

Two standout examples of such deals, where the firm supported Ashurst, saw Mason lead the team to act for Candover in relation to the €1.2 billion sale of Belgian manufacturer of hygienic disposables Ontex to Goldman Sachs PIA and TPG Capital. Mason also led the a team to advise London based private equity house Oakley Capital on the acquisition of the travel website group EMESA.
Mason, Casper Haket and Bastiaan Kout also represented JP Morgan and Citibank in collaboration with Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton as underwriters on the €1.2 billion bid by NWR of Bogdanka while Arjen Mulderije, Isle-Marye Alwon and Marlijn Tacke also acted for Novell on the pre-closing transactions of its merger with Attachmate Corporation and Longview Software Acquisition Corp.

Knol recently litigated for claimants Dutch Central Bank in the bankruptcy of Icelandic bank Landsbanki Islands, and Michel Deckers was active representing Rosneft, Yukos and Capital Sarl in litigation relating to the execution in the Netherlands of arbitral awards which have been set aside in the Russian Federation.
Jongepier's big assignment saw him act as bankruptcy administrator to Thieme Groep, the second largest Dutch printing company. Jongepier worked with Marian van Eck to adviise Organon and Merck on liquidating research facilities in the Netherlands.
