Hamilton Harrison & Matthews has deep heritage in the legal market and it continues to win mandates in substantial and significant work, such as the demutualisation of the Nairobi Stock Exchange, the restructuring of the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), the sale of Nairobi Airport Services and a rights issue for Standard Chartered Bank.
Clients recommend HH&M for equity capital markets work, Paras Shah in particular is recommended: "An excellent lawyer, very good on the law and on commercial issues," says one.
In top deals, Richard Omwela and Daniel Wanjau were engaged by the Nairobi Stock Exchange to assist on its demutualisation, the first in Central and East Africa. Omwela also closed a deal in December 2010 for Servair on its acquisition of Nairobi Airport Services, the largest regional flight catering company and one of the largest M&A.
Shah advised the KPLC on its capital base restructuring exercise which included a $107 million rights issues and $161 million private share issue. The deal was large and involved negotiations with the government. Shah also worked with Jennifer Mbaluto to advise Standard Chartered Bank Kenya on its $27 million rights issue, one of the largest issues in the financial sector in Kenya.
In mid-2011, Shah had also won mandates on a large rights issue for Kenya Airways (for over $200 million) and for Standard Chartered Bank Kenya on a $120 million financing to a Kenyan oil company.
