Sidley Austin adds M&A and private equity partner in Manhattan

14 Jan 2013

Sidley Austin has expanded the capabilities of its M&A and private equity team in New York with the hiring of a veteran attorney from WilmerHale.

Michael J. O’Brien is now a partner in Sidley’s New York office. O’Brien’s clients in his more than three decades of legal work include private equity firms, public and private companies, and financial institutions. During his five years at WilmerHale, O’Brien played a leading role in many significant deals. O’Brien represented Blum Capital Partners in a series of private investment in public equity (PIPE) transactions, provided counsel to Citibank in the sale of the Diners Club Network to Discover Financial Services, and represented Caremark Rx as it underwent a merger with CVS Corporation, in a deal valued at $26 billion. He also oversaw the restructuring of a long-term business relationship between two leading companies in the biopharmaceutical field.

“I do a considerable amount of financial institutional work, mostly in the payment system space – credit cards and electronic commerce. I’ve been heavily involved in the development of a mobile commerce system, involving all sorts of players in that industry,” O’Brien noted.

Before joining WilmerHale, O’Brien worked as the managing partner of King & Spalding’s Manhattan office. He is also a former partner at O’Sullivan Graev & Karabell and a former associate at Cravath Swaine & Moore.
