EUROPE, MIDDLE EAST & AFRICA

February kept up the pace of lateral hires across the board with notable movements in London between US and UK firms and activity among private equity practitioners.

The first big move of the month saw Sullivan & Cromwell boost its leverage finance expertise with the lateral hire of private equity expert Presley Warner, who left Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer on 2nd February after a dedicated 16 years at the firm. Warner, who became a partner in 2000 and who often acted for Goldman Sachs, will join the Sullivan’s credit and leveraged finance team.

Less than a week later, Berwin Leighton Paisner pulled off quite a coup against Herbert Smith with the recruitment of private wealth and charities highflyer Rupert Ticehurst, who was in part lured by the offer of being an equity partner. Nearing the end of the month Herbert Smith lost another private equity expert in former partner and consultant Henry Raine, who threw his lot in with Wonga where he will act as general counsel.

Again in private equity, DLA Piper lost Kiran Sharma to the London office of US firm Ropes & Gray and Malcolm MacDougall to Speechly Bircham. However in the other direction the firm recruited Jonathan Lisle, an M&A partner and specialist in healthcare and public company takeovers, from rival CMS Cameron McKenna.

Reed Smith, one of the two most active US lateral hirers in London in 2010, went one down, losing restructuring partner Julian Turner to UK media and corporate firm Olswang. Across town, K&L Gates continued its recruiting spree with financial services and investment manager Martin Cornish, the former managing partner of Katten Muchin Rosenman Cornish.

Lateral hires heated up near the end of the month with a series of big announcements in London, Paris and Brussels. Shearman & Sterling’s Brussels’ office nabbed a team of five competition partners from Howrey, including former and current managing partners Trevor Soames and Stephen Mavroghenis. Götz Drauz, Geert Goeteyn and Miguel Rato will join the exodus to Shearman and the whole team is expected to start work in its new office by the beginning of March. Shearman & Sterling’s bulk hire served to swing the European tally the other way following the earlier departure in Paris of M&A partner Tanguy d’Everlange, who will take up a position as managing partner of the local French outfit Kalliopé.

Another bulk hire saw US firm Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker recruit a team of three corporate partners to its Paris office, namely Pascal de Moidrey and Alexis Terray from Hogan Lovells and Guillaume Kellner from Proskauer Rose. The firm was very active with comings and goings across its offices and earlier in the month lost projects partner Jonathan Simpson, an expert in advising governments and international sponsors, to Hunton & Williams. Olswang’s Paris office was also busy poaching corporate partner Guillaume Kessler and finance partner Stephan Alamowitch from rivals.

However, the news of the month was the bold move by Norton Rose to open an office in Hamburg and poach eight partners from rival DLA Piper. The lateral hires included DLA Piper managing partner Klaus von Gierke. Seven of the partners, specialising in corporate, finance and energy, will begin work in Hamburg in March, while energy partner Corrado Wohlwend will join the office in Frankfurt.

Elsewhere, Swedish firm Magnusson announced a new office in Helsinki for which it hired three Finnish corporate / finance partners, including two from local rival Peltonen Ruokonen & Itaine.

ASIA-PACIFIC
The biggest series of moves in Asia was created by the trickle of partners leaving Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker. On February 1 SNR Denton Shanghai announced that Mitchell Dudek, the former chair of the Paul Hastings’ Shanghai office, and Alex Wang would be joining its corporate and real estate practices. On February 8 across the water in Tokyo, White & Case announced that partners Jun Usami and Ayako Kawano would be joining its M&A, real estate and restructuring practices. Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe then took two high flying litigation partners to its Tokyo office.

AMERICAS
February saw an active market in the Americas. Very early in the month Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft’s New York office lost finance partner Karen Gelernt to Alston & Bird, while it had been announced on 30th January that Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe securitisation partners James Croke and Peter Manbeck would make their way across town to join the team at Chapman and Cutler.

The big UK recruiters Greenberg Traurig and Reed Smith both lost partners in New York. Greenberg’s M&A partner Stephen Mallenbaum and leveraged finance guru Sean Hayes defected to SNR Denton to bolster the firm’s Venture Technology Group, while Reed Smith’s Michael Smith took a place in the finance and corporate team at Kaye Scholar. Smith brings with him an especially good track record in cross-border transactions. Across town DLA Piper lost tax partner Brian Andreoli to Squire, Sanders & Dempsey, which also managed to recruit the firm’s energy of counsel Aaron Ball.

The last big moves in New York in February included the lateral hire of derivatives partner Conrad Bahlke, who left Weil Gotshal & Manges to set up office at the derivatives and commodities practice of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan, and corporate and securities partner Andrew Hulsh leave Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld to take up a place at Mayer Brown as co-leader of the US private equity practice. Vinson & Elkins nabbed two energy partners from O'Melveny & Myers.

Elsewhere in the US, Hogan Lovells Houston bolstered its infrastructure team with new recruits David Locascio and Jose Luis Vittor from rival McDermott Will & Emery and King & Spalding poached banking partner Scott Stengel from Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe in Washington DC, bringing Orrick’s tally over the month to three US partner losses. Stengel, a specialist in bank regulatory, capital markets and restructuring, will join the firm’s capital transactions and real estate practice.

North of the border, Gowling Lafleur Henderson made the news in Canada with two partner hires in Montreal and Toronto. The first saw corporate finance partner Marc-André Godard leave McCarthy Tétrault, while the second saw financial services partner Vickie Wong leave Fraser Milner Casgrain.

GLOBAL MANAGEMENT
February was busy on the management side with appointments being announced throughout the month.

Herbert Smith finally found a suitable replacement for the position of global head of oil & gas, which had been occupied by Paul Griffin until May 2010. The firm appointed energy, resources and projects partner Stephen Murray to the role with immediate effect. Spanish firm Garrigues appointed a new managing partner to its London office to replace the departing Guillermo Muñoz-Alonso. Ignacio Corbera Dale took the up the position in February.

One of the most interesting appointments happened in Beijing, where Robert Lewis accepted the offer to become international managing partner for local Chinese firm Zhong Lun Law Firm. Lewis, the former managing partner of Lovells’ Beijing office and more recently a partner of Shanghai based Allbright Law Office, is one of the first senior foreign lawyers to take up a position in a local firm. Lewis will manage the firm’s international relationships.

The business community picked up a number of highflyers, including British Airways’ appointment of Andrew Fleming as head of legal, Apollo Global Management’s hire of Paul Loynes as European head of legal and Wonga’s recruitment of Herbert Smith’s former partner Henry Raine as general counsel.
